Meet Captain Fantastic of the FC Bengaluru: Sunil Chhetri

In India, people follow cricket like a religion but football which is the world’s best spectator sport. But times have changed now! Even India is trying to compete with the world's best soccer teams. Also, there is no one to cheer for them.

 Honestly, motivation is what is stopping the Indian Football team from making its mark in the field of soccer. There is someone who is known for his exceptional performance as an Indian soccer player and believes in playing the odds. Yes you are right; we are talking about Sunil Chhetri aka Captain Fantastic.

Football in his blood

Professional footballer Sunil was born on 3rd August 1984 in Secunderabad, Telangana. Chhetri's parents were themselves renowned football players of their time; His father Kharga Chettri was an officer and played soccer for the Indian Army's team and his mother Sushila Chettri and her twin sisters played for the Nepal women’s national soccer team. Sunil was introduced to soccer at an early age in his life.

Delhi at-heart

Although, Sunil was born in Telangana but he remembers most of his time in the capital only. Also, he calls Delhi his home-town. Sunil studied at the Army Public School, Dhaula Kuan New Delhi where he completed his class 12th. After completing 12th standard, Chhetri stopped studying as he got the chance to represent India at the Asian School Championships in Malaysia in 2001.

Record breaking

Sunil made his mark in International football during a tournament in 2005; his first match was against Pakistan. Chhetri is the only Indian footballer to have scored 50 international goals

Kansas City Wizards

Sunil Chettri was a part of the Kansas City Wizards of Major League Soccer (MLS). On 14th of April, 2010 Chhetri made his debut for the Wizards in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup qualification game against the Colorado Rapids in which he got a yellow card and sat out of the game.
