Directed by Nightcrawler hit-maker Dan Gilroy, Velvet Buzzsaw is the latest offering of Netflix in association with Dease Pictures Inc which is exceptionally delightful to watch. US-based media service provider, Netflix released the Jake Gyllenhaal starrer on Monday.
Soon after releasing hit action movie Polar, Netflix has launched a yet-another intriguing project which revolves around art, art-critic, artists and a ghost. Stronger actor Gyllenhaal as a wealthy art-critic named Morf Vandewalt, is undoubtedly amongst his best performances so far.
From bitchy attitude to poetic outrage of artists; Vandewalt is a successful art-critic in the middle of power, sex and money capital of the world, Los Angeles, California, U.S. Living in a gigantic lavish-palace, Morf is contacted by an aspiring art-dealer, Josephina essayed by Zawe Ashton who somehow found late artist Ventril Dease's art-works.
It must be admitted that Gilroy's latest movie, Velvet Buzzsaw has well-written and well-researched characters including Morf Vandewalt, Rhodora Haze, Jon Dondon, Coco and Damrish (even their names sound exquisite). The screenplay unfolds beautifully once you start acknowledging the pun in Morf's art gallery.
Late artist-painter Ventril Dease was an abused child who was incarcerated for years after murdering his father. Later, it is disclosed that Dease worked as a janitor throughout his life and remained anonymous as an artist.
And now that Dease is dead, Vandewalt and Rhodora wants to bet on his art-work which are remarked as 'visionary, mesmeric and ensorcelling' by the most critical art-reviewer, Morf. Sooner, Morf puts Dease's art-work on display which starts flying off the shelf.
Late artist Ventril remained anonymous throughout his life, gained immense popularity and attention through his paintings. However, Dease isn't happy about it and decides to walk out of his grave for taking revenge from whosoever took advantage of his art-work after his death.
What happens next is a nightmare for every artist in the world; late artist Ventril's spirit starts possessing his art-work and later, killing the person who bought it.
In one scene, art-gallery curator, Gretchen's hand gets chopped off by an art-work which was possessed by Ventril Dease's spirit. And the pun is that no one realizes that a woman has died inside the art-gallery. If anything, people are amused with Gretchen's dead boy and a pool of blood in the middle of heart-wrenching paintings.
Dan Gilroy's directorial focuses on the shallowness of art enthusiasts who care more about the money and less about the quality, intention, or inspiration behind an art-work. In brief, Netflix's Velvet Buzzsaw starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Natalia Dyer, John Malkovich, Toni Collette, Rene Russo and Billy Magnussen among others is a fun-filled roller coaster ride which will sweep you off your feet.
As per our final verdict, Velvet Buzzsaw is an intriguing movie which brilliantly combines elements from horror and art. We will like to award 9 out of 10 stars to the Netflix Original movie.
