90’s were the most unforgettable era in the Indian cinemas. It's the decade which witnessed blockbuster films like Baazigar, Hum Aapke Hai Koun, Dil, DDLJ, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Dil To Pagal Hai, Hero No. 1, etc. Because there no internet in that era, these films were the soul inspiration for fashion. 90’s were a time where we saw some of the amazing fashion which are still ruling the runways but at the same time some of those trends were so ugly that we hope they should never come back.
Laugh out loud over the worst but get inspired from the best!
Bollywood movies, especially in India are the real trendsetters of fashion. And 90's fashion is known to be iconic and was truly a milestone in itself. 90’s was the era when costume designers like Sabyasachi and Manish Malhotra stepped into this industry and changed its fashion game.
Have a look at some of the brilliant and the ugliest fashion statements from 90's Bollywood:
The Best of 90's Bollywood Fashion
The red lace dress teamed up with a broad brown belt donned by Madhuri Dixit in Hum Aapke Hain Kon, started the trend of elegant yet chic maxi dresses in India. At that time, it had become a wardobe staple for every young fashionista.
A trend which has been around in the recent times, athleisure became trendy right after the film Dil To Pagal Hai. This movie introduced how to incorporate sports-wear in everyday style of dressing.
Off - Shoulder Tops
It all started in the 90's when actresses like Juhi Chawla used to rick it along with chunky corset belts. Off-the-shoulder tops came back into the fashion game again in 2017 and are definitely here to stay.
Do you remember Juhi Chawla's iconic lime-yellow coloured off-shoulder dress from the movie Darr? She added the wow factor in a dull-plain dress by wearing a huge corset belt over the same. The trend became really bit at that time and is seen to be coming back in fashion since last one year.
Satin & Chiffon Saris
It all began with Madhuri Dixit's most iconoc heavily-embellished gorgeous purple sari from the film Hum Aapke Hain Kaun and even Karisma Kapoor's saris from Biwi No. 1 were a great hit. We all still prefer wearing satin and chiffon saris the most as they make our figures look more flattering.
The worst of 90's Bollywood Fashion
There was too much gold and too much bling on screens. Nowadays, people prefer wearing statement jewellery or oxidised jewellery the most.
Puffed sleeves with short dresses are still bearable but in the 90's when they were incorporated in ethnic wear, example sari blouses, they were a big disaster. It is one of those 90's trend that we home should never make its comeback.
From Aishwarya Rai to Shilpa Shetty, back in the 90's we don't know why but thin brows were seemed to be a necessity. They make your face look so bad, we are thanking god that well-groomed and arched brows came back into fashion.
Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Hritik Roshan seemed to love sheer tees as they used to wear them in all of their films, giving us a clear view of their chest. Although we did not mind the view but sheer tees were just plain ugly.
Weather it was Karisma Kapoor's inspiration by the French-maid costume in Andaz Apna Apna or Raveena Tondon took her baby-cut too seriously, but 90's hairstylists surely didn't pay as much attention and managed to create some of the worst hairstyles of the century.
