The divinity herself, Rekha, has always preferred the monk way when it comes to her personal life. She hardly ever gives interviews or meets journalists for a casual rendezvous. It's not entirely her fault, marriages and relationships have always been quite fragile in Bollywood. From Dilip Kumar and Madhubala to Hrithik Roshan and Sussanne Khan, many have seen the bumpy and unlucky road when it comes to love.
Yet the most-talked about love story remains of superstar Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha. This love story has no conclusion, and it still remains a mystery as both the actors never accepted their relationship in public but everyone else seems more than certain about the affair.
From where did it start and why did it end? Let's unfold the secret behind this love story.
An Unsuccessful Love Story
Their forbidden love began on the sets of the film Do Anjaane (1976), when Amitabh was a married man. At the beginning, the couple used to meet in a bungalow that belonged to Rekha's friend. Everything was going smooth until something happened. During the shooting of Ganga Ki Saugandh (1978), Amitabh lost his temper on a co-star because he was misbehaving with Rekha. That is when their love affair came in the limelight and grabbed everyone's attention. Though the two denied their relationship, everything was loud and clear to the people.
Very soon Rekha-Amitabh's affair was making the headlines like, Rekha and Amitabh have secretly tied the knot. And then came the hurricane that shook us all. Rekha made a sensational entry at Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh's wedding, wearing sindoor and mangalsutra. The attention shifted to Rekha and her much-married look. Not only this, she also went up to Amitabh and started talking to him formally, raising more eyebrows!
After a few minutes of conversation, the controversy queen of that time left the wedding venue! Many questions about this jodi’s affair were answered with this bold step taken by Rekha.
Does Rekha wear sindoor for Big B?
It’s been a long time since Rekha-Amitabh affair ended, but it is well-known that Rekha has always seen making appearances supporting a sindoor on her forehead. She has been sporting this look for more than two decades now. In her candid interview in 2008, she was again asked about the reason behind wearing sindoor. She said: “I don’t worry about people’s reactions. By the way, I think it looks rather nice on me.. sindoor suits me.”
When Jaya came to know about their forbidden love
After Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh's wedding incident, Jaya Bachchan invited Rekha home for dinner to get the cat out of the bag and made it clear that she would never leave her husband, no matter what! And likewise, Jaya has kept her word. Till then, Rekha has realised that she either wants to be Mrs. Bachchan or stay single.
Despite a heart filled with love for Rekha, Amitabh never admitted it in public. On the other hand, Rekha had boldly admitted her feelings for him. Silsila was this enigmatic couple's last film together.
Director of the film, Yash Chopra made an interesting statement about this whole scenario, which reveals so much. "I was always on tenterhooks and scared (during Silsila) because it was real life coming into reel life. Jaya is his wife and Rekha is his girlfriend and the same story is going on (in real life). Anything could have happened because they are working together."
After the shoot of Silsila, Amitabh-Rekha's relationship began to fade. She wanted to marry him but did not want to settle down with the tag of the 'other woman' in Big B's life. Soon after she realised there is no future and that's when their passionate love story came to an end, both on and off screen.
Rekha's new love or rebound?
After her mysterious relationship with Amitabh Bachchan had an unfortunate ending, she moved on with life and tied the knot in 1990 to Mukesh Agarwal. In her recently released autobiography, there is a whole chapter dedicated to her marriage which gives clear details. The excerpt itself reads: “Rekha was finally getting married. After a lifetime of seeking, Rekha, born out of wedlock, had finally got what she most desired: a legitimate surname.”
Three months after her marriage, Rekha was shattered to know that her husband is mentally ill. She decided to take some time off and think about her marriage. When she was not able to come to a conclusion, she decided to distance herself from Mukesh and his family, she left home and stopped taking his calls.
One unfortunate day, when her distressed husband was unable to take all this, he hanged himself to a ceiling fan of his room, using his wife's dupatta. Their marriage lasted for only seven months!
Is Rekha still in love with Big B?
Some believe Rekha is still smitten by Big B. In one of her interviews to Hindustan Times in 2008, when the journalist asked her if she would like people to stop connecting her to Mr. Bachchan, she promptly replied: “Why? I hope not. Mr Bachchan is one of the best things to have happened in my life. The best teacher, the best guru. Well, I’ve chosen to learn as much from his off-camera.. as from his on-camera demeanours.”
This heartbreaking tale of unrequited love never saw daylight! Post Silsila, Big B is said to have ignored Rekha completely. Though the two came quite close to starring together in R Balki's Shamitabh, they did not share any screen space together.
Whatever the circumstances and reasons had been for Amitabh and Rekha's breakup, the heavy aura of this sad love story still lingers on.
