Top 15 Bollywood Thriller Movies


There are hundreds of Bollywood movies that get released every year, and most of them are either romantic, comedy, action or drama. It is a proven fact that most of the Indian movie buffs love to watch these genres of movies than suspense or thriller.

Hindi cinema industry which is known for its masala films, only has a handful of suspense/thriller movies to offer to the audience. Now, they might be less in number but trust me, they’re better than the mainstream- comedy and romantic films.

Though thriller is not a popular genre in Bollywood, suspense/thriller movies have their own way to captivate an audience. Earlier, Bollywood always tried to keep itself away from the suspense/thriller genre but it all changed in the 90’s decade when the concept of a psychopath thriller was actually begun. It was the time when the audience where introduced by most of the iconic and memorable villains and vamps characters.

Here is a list of top fifteen Bollywood thriller movies which are great to watch and will blow your mind with the interesting twist and turns in the story-

Darr (1993)

Yash Raj’s romantic thriller ‘Darr’ stars Shah Rukh Khan, Sunny Deol, and Juhi Chawla released in the year 1993. The film was massively prised by the audience and critics. Darr was a story about Rahul Mehra (Shah Rukh Khan) a man who’s obsession and love for Kiran Awasti (Juhi Chawla) frees him from all fears of life and death. Even though she gets married to Sunil Malhotra (Sunny Deol) his obsession for her doesn’t end. A man who does not fear anything will go to any extent to get what he wants and Rahul Mehra just does that. In this movie, Shah Rukh Khan nailed the role of an obsessive psychopath lover. This is also the movie in which Shah Rukh trademarked his “K..K…K…Kiran”  dialogue which is popular even today.

Baazigar (1993)

In the same year director duo Abbas-Mustan’s crime thriller ‘Baazigar’ starred Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, and Shilpa Shetty was also released. It was a Hindi adaptation of Hollywood film A Kiss Before Dying’. The film shocked the Indian audience with its twists because it didn’t adhere to the typical Bollywood formula. The hero kills one of the female leads ( Shilpa Shetty) was enough to engage the audience back days. Rukh Khan’s portrayal of grey character in the film made him a superstar overnight while Kajol charmed the audience with her stellar performances and Shilpa Shetty made her big bollywood debut with the film. From the film dialogue “Haar kar jeetney wale ko baazigar kehte hain” become very famous and till day it is one of the popular dialogue among the audience. Baazigar did decent at the box-office.

Gupt: The Hidden Truth (1997)

The film starring Bobby Deol, Kajol, Manisha Koirala and Paresh Rawal was a suspense mystery. It was directed by Rajiv Raj. Jaisingh lives in India with his stepson, Sahil (Bobby Deol) who dislikes his father. Things only get worse between father and son, when Jaisingh wants him to get married to Sheetal (Manisha Koirala), a woman he has chosen to be his daughter-in-law but Sahil wants to marry another girl by the name of Isha (Kajol), and no amount of pressure can get him to change his mind. Finally, an argument ensues between the two, with Jaisingh getting killed and Sahil get arrested in the case. The film saw Kajol portraying a negative character of an obsessive lover, which was something new for the audience.  The film was a huge hit at the box-office and helped boost the career of the three actors in the movie. Kajol won a Filmfare award for her role and also won the audiences hearts with her performance.

Sangharsh (1999)

The story of Sangarsh was inspired by Silence of the Lambs. The film features Akshay Kumar, Preity Zinta, Ashutosh Rana and Aman Verma in the lead roles. Sangarsh had some moments that would send chills down your spine. Ashutosh Rana’s performance was over-the-top. Akshay Kumar did a pretty good job at portraying the role of a genius professor falsely implicated in a case. Preity Zinta plays the role of a CBI officer, who takes Akshay Kumar’s help to catch the crazy serial killer. However, it was Ashutosh Rana’s performance as a fanatic, who kidnaps young boys for sacrifice which stole the limelight.  Sangarsh was directed by Tanuja Chandra.

Kaun (1999)

A psychological horror thriller film directed by Ram Gopal Verma starring Urmila Matondkar, Manoj Bajpai and Sushant Singh. The movie is actually brilliant from conception to execution. Kaun only featured three characters in one place. The entire plot also happens in one night. Urmila and Manoj had given an excellent performance in the movie. Kaun is one of a masterpiece d by Ram Gopal Verma and written by Anurag Kashyap.

Kahaani (2012)

Vidya Balan starrer Kahani’ became the game charger for Hindi film industry as it becomes the best women-centric movie in Bollywood that wowed the audience that year. The suspense thriller film was released in 2012 and it narrates the story of a pregnant woman who visits Kolkata from London in search of her missing husband. Apparently, everyone she questions about his whereabouts denies of having ever met him. Later the plot of the movie unfolds with an unpredictable twist. Kahaani takes the audience on a roller-coaster ride in the adventurous and gripping storyline. The film was helmed by National Award-winning filmmaker Sujoy Ghosh. Apart from Vidya Balam the film also stars Parambrata Chatterjee and Indraneil Sengupta. It made over over Rs 90 crore. After the success of Kahaani, Ghosh also came up with the second part of the franchise last year with Kahaani 2: Durga Rani Singh.

Drishyam (2015)

Bollywood star actor Ajay Devgn’s suspense thriller ‘Drishyam’ blow the audiences mind with the crispy storyline and stellar performances. From the star cast to gripping suspense, everything was top notch in the film. Even though it was a remake of Jeethu Joseph’s 2013 Malayalam blockbuster film Drishyam, the story had the same impact on the audience as it had the first time. The film tells the story of a family man who goes to extreme length lengths to cover up a boy’s murder committed by his wife and his elder daughter. Apart from Ajay Devgn Drisham also stars Tabu, Shriya Saran, Rajat Kapoor Ishita Dutta. It was directed by Nishikant Kamat and did wonders at the box-office.

Ek Villain (2014)

Mohit Suri directed Ek Villain is a story of Rakesh Mahadkar (Riteish Deshmukh) an unsuccessful man who is continuously taunted by his wife Sulochana (Aamna Sharif) for being useless and poor. He vents out this frustration by killing women if they ever speak rude to him. The film also stars Sidharth Malhotra and Shraddha Kapoor in pivotal roles. Although, the movie did very well at the box-office and Riteish’s role as Rakesh received a lot of praise from audience and critics.

Murder (2004)

It was an erotic thriller film directed by Anurag Basu and produced by Mukesh Bhatt. It is the first installment in the Murder film series. The film featured Mallika Sherawat, Emraan Hashmi and Ashmit Patel. The story set in Bogkok, Thailand where Simran played by Mallika was a lonely housewife who bumps into Sunny, her lover from her past, and the two get into an extramarital affair but when her husband (Ashmit Patel) finds out, he plans to end the affair as quickly as it began. He suddenly gets involved with Sunny’s murder. The film was a highly successful venture at the box office.

A Wednesday (2008)

Neeraj Pandey directed a Wednesday, based on the Mumbai locals serial bomb blasts, this movie was an excellent one on all levels. The story of a nameless common man and his plan for revenge will give you goosebumps. The film features two of Bollywood’s best actors- Anupam Kher and Naseerruddin Shah. The film also has Jimmy Sheirgill is lead role. A Wednesday received a lot of appreciation from the critics and as well as from the audience.

No Smoking (2007)

John Abraham starred No Smoking is an Anurag Kashyap’s directorial psychological thriller film. It is a story about a man named K (John Abraham) and his addiction to smoking. He wants to quit smoking; otherwise, everything in his life will be at stake. The film also stars Ayesha Takia, Abbas Tyrewala, and Paresh Rawal.

Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007)

Directed by Priyadarshan, this movie, starring Vidya Balan, Akshay Kumar, Shiney Ahuja, Ameesha Patel and Paresh Rawal, is a complete entertainer. It is one of the best suspense movies of Bollywood. Vidya Balan’s performance in the movie was much-appreciated and the movie’s complex mystery I progresses. It tells that story of a husband and wife to ignore the rumors of their ancestral home being haunted and decide to stay there anyway. When strange events start happening they start thinking maybe there was some truth to the rumors. The film ends with an interesting twist. Bhool Bhulaiyaa was an official remake of the 1993 hit Malayalam film Manichitrathazhu.

Manorama Six Feet Under (2007)

The film stars Abhay Deol who is one of the most talents actors of Bollywood and also known for its unique choice of movie. Satyaveer Singh Randhawa, a Junior Engineer by profession finds himself playing a detectives role in a small sleepy town of Rajasthan. Here he finds himself caught in a web of lies, deceit, and murder. This movie is not known by many audiences but the performance of Abhay Deol won’t disappoint. Apart from Abhay Deol, the film also stars Gul Panag and Raima Sen in lead roles. It was helmed and written by Navdeep Singh. The climax is well written and captures attention.

Ugly (2013)

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap psychological thriller Ugly is a masterpiece. The film revolves around the kidnapping of a 10-year-old girl. A lonely and troubled housewife is addicted to alcohol and battling depression, grinding between both her ex-husband and her current husband (a cop). This movie has it all and mainly revolves around their missing daughter. The climax is something is beyond your imagination. The film features Rahul Bhat, Ronit Roy and Tejaswini Kolhapure.

100 Days (1991)

The mystery thriller ‘100 Days’ is psychological thriller film, starring Jackie Shroff, Madhuri Dixit, Moon Moon Sen and Javed Jaffrey. It is a story of a young woman Devi (Madhuri Dixit) who is gifted with powers to oversee incidents much before they happen. Once she gets a vision that her sister Rama has been killed few days later Rama gets killed and no one is aware about her death as her body has been buried inside the wall of a huge mansion closed for years. She tries to find out who the killer is. The film was directed by Partho Ghosh.
