From facing plagiarism charges on Akshay Kumar and Sonam Kapoor starrer-PadMan to film stars like Sidharth Malhotra and Kangana Ranaut issuing statements; 2018 was packed with controversies So as the year comes to an end, let's have a look back at the major controversies that hit B-town:
Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi
Kangana Ranaut starrer- Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi faced a lot of troubles before being able to release the trailer and start their respective promotions. The controversy began when clapboard from the film’s sets began doing the rounds with Kangana’s name written as the director. This happened, when Krish Jagarlamudi was still directing the movie.
Soon enough, Ranaut's team issued a statement clarifying that she was just shooting some patchwork and extra scenes in Jagarlamudi's absence and he was indeed still the director.
Later, co-star Sonu Sood made suprising exit from the movie and asked Kangana to “stop playing the victim card”.
If you remember, we kicked off 2018 with the much-talked about Padmaavat controversy. Many Rajput groups including Karni Sena protested, destroyed the film sets and even sent threats to Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Deepika Padukone. While several states banned the film, the Supreme Court dismissed a petition against its release.
The film was scheduled to release on December 1, 2017 as Padavati but it got postponed. However, it finally released on January 25, 2018, with a changed title – Padmaavat. The movie eventually broke several box office records.
Swara Bhasker's masturbation scene from Veere Di Wedding
Bollywood star Swara Bhasker is well-known for essaying bold female characters on screen. Doing the same, she had to face some trouble over a masturbation scene in Veere Di Wedding. While she recieved much criticism, the actor shared that she expected so. It won't be wrong to say that Swara handled the whole situation like a boss!
Bollywood actress Tanushree Dutta took the Hindi film fraternity by shock when she accused veteran actor Nana Patekar of sexually harassing her at the sets of Horn Ok Pleassss. The incident took place while shooting a song which was later completed by Rakhi Sawant.
Dutta's accusation gave strength to many others, and soon, charges against filmmaker Vikas Bahl which led to the production banner Phantom Films being dissolved.
Many others including Alok Nath, Gursimran Khamba, Subhash Ghai, Tanmay Bhat, Subhash Ghai among others were also accused of sexual misconduct.
Sidharth Malhotra's Bhojpuri trouble!
While promoting his movie Aiyaary on Bigg Boss 11, Sidharth Malhotra was expected to speak in Bhojpuri. Trying to do so, he ended up saying that he is getting a “latrine-kind” of feeling. Soon, Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! star Neetu Chandra, whose natal tongue is Bhojpuri, slammed Malhotra on Twitter.
She wrote, “So disappointed @S1dharthM some1who is so fortunate 2 work wd d best. Who despite being an outsider has made a name 4 himself,4 U 2 use ur words so loosely.2 disrespect #Bhojpuri on national TV. SHOCKED! How on earth does speaking in #Bhojpuri gives u a latrine feeling. Shame on U.”
After the debate settled, he issued an apology. He tweeted, “‘I recently tried speaking a new language while I was on a TV show. In the process, if I inadvertently hurt anyone’s feelings or sentiments, I apologise and assure you that no disrespect was meant in any way.”
Just days after the release of Akshay Kumar, Radhika Apte and Sonam Kapoor starrer-PadMan, the film was caught in between plagiarism charges. Ripu Daman Jaiswal alleged that he had written the script for PadMan even before Twinkle Khanna announced the film.
Apparently, he had sent synopsis of the film to Dharma Productions' creative head and also to Vikramaditya Motwane. He later spoke about some of the scenes that have been taken from his script.
For the uninitiated, PadMan is inspired from the life of social activist Arunachalam Muruganantham, who introduced low-cost sanitary pads. It is based n Twinkle Khanna’s short story in her book The Legend of Lakshmi Prasad.
