It is a occasion which is celebrated all over the nation. People decorate their homes with bright lights, eat delicious sweets, reunite with their family and burst crackers.
Love and be loved, this Diwali
Along with Diwali celebration, we unknowingly contribute towards pollution and wastage of resources. We create harm to our planet not only by bursting crackers but also by utilizing excess amount of resources for a mere show-off. Well! Here are a few ways through which you can celebrate an eco-friendly Diwali without wasting resources:
Light but electricity
You must not use electric lights to illuminate your home. Instead, you should opt for diyas (earthen lamps) and candles which will not only illuminate the surroundings but will also provide warmth and positive vibes. And if you must use electric illumination, opt for LED lights. They use at least 80 per cent lesser energy than the regular ones and also come in various hues too.
As we all are now well-aware of numerous environment-friendly crackers that are available in the market and are less polluting than others. However, this Diwali completely miss the fireworks. Instead you must gather all the children of your community to go for a nature walk. And celebrate this festival of lights by lighting a bonfire on the terrace or in an open space and serve homemade sweets and sherbet.
Rangolis were initially made to feed the birds, in earlier time. This Diwali, recreate the old ritual of Rangoli. Instead of using artificial colors, make your rangoli with spices and other food items; For white use rice powder, for yellow use pulses or turmeric, for brown use cloves or cinnamon, for green use cardamom or fennel and for red use dry chili or kumkum.
Decoration is an important part of Diwali celebration. But if you must paint your home, then use eco-friendly paint. Besides, there are a few tricks for decorating your home without having to paint it at all. You may twist colorful saris and dupattas to create streamers or paint old newspapers and hang them up as wall decorations.
This Diwali make your own sweets using only natural products like milk, chickpea flour (besan), coconut, jiggery, dry fruits, sugar etc and keep them both nutritious and unadulterated instead of buying from a commercial store. Although innumerable options are available commercially but most of them has artificial colors and way too much sugar, so try to avoid them.
Instead of buying expensive crockery for all your parties this festive season, go traditional and stay eco-friendly. You must organize some banana leaves and small earthen glasses for serving your guests.
If you love shopping for gifts, then stop spending more on wrapping paper; save on it and stop trees from being cut. Instead, you should wrap your gifts with painted newspaper / make your own gift bags with newspaper / use pieces of cloth lying about in the house, which you can embroider, or handpaint, or even jute.
On Diwali we express our happiness by exchanging gifts and sweets. Go organic this Diwali by gifting organic gifts to your friends and relative. There are a number of options available in the market; you can gift organic soaps and creams, organic teas, spices, gourmet ice creams or coffee. If you want to gift something different you can gift plants. There are a number of ornamental plants are available in the market.
Weeks before Diwali people clean their houses to attract positive energy in their homes. People take out unwanted things like toys, house hold items, and cloths. Donate these unwanted things in an orphanage or to a local shelter. You can also buy some new cloths, crackers, books, colors, sweets etc for them. This way you can make their Diwali brighter and you will have a memorable Diwali.
These above listed tricks will surely help making your Diwali more fun and low on cost. Therefore, we wish you a safe, happy and prosperous Diwali this year.
