Oscars 2019 India’s official entry: Deepika Padukone’s Padmaavat or Alia Bhatt’s Raazi?

Going by the reports from a leading daily, the films that are in the running to become India’s official entry to Oscars 2019 are Meghna Gulzar's Raazi starring Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's magnum opmus Padmaavat starring Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor & Shoojit Sircar's October featuring Varun Dhawan and debutant Banita Sandhu.

Having said that, the recently-released Nandita Das’s Manto starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Freida Pinto and Richa Chaddha’s Love Sonia are also among the top contenders with Umesh Shukla's 102 Not Out starring Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor & R. Balki's PadMan with Akshay Kumar, Radhika Apte and Sonam Kapoor.

According to reports, until now 28 films are fighting for the spot and the announcement will be made later today. The decision will be revealed at the IMPPA house. From the regional cinema, Gujarati films include Reva and Best of Luck Laalu, Tamil films include To Let and Kolamavu Kokila, Marathi films include Bogda, Nude and Gulabjaam and Assamese films include Village Rockstar are also a part of the race.

Meghna Gulzar's Raazi was based on Harinder Sikka’s 2008 novel Calling Sehmat. It is a tru story about an Indian Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) agent who, upon her father's order, is married into a Pakistani family of military officials to relay information to India, prior to the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971.

About Padmaavat, it is the story about Rajput honour and valour. It is the story about a Rajput queen who sacrificed herself for her kingdom, a queen who did not let the evil inside her house till she took her last breath.
