The #MeToo movement, first started in a faraway land, however, now its in our ears & it is time that we wake up! It is now or never. It takes courage to speak up- not aginst a powerful person- but telling your story to the world with the fear of being left unheard.
It all began when Bollywood actress and model Tanushree Dutta, once again accused veteran actor and Horn Ok Pleassss co-star Nana Patekar of sexually misbehaving with her omn sets. The #MeToo movement gained back its momentum in Bollywood as well as the media industry and by the looks of it, it is here to bring a serious change. Tanushree’s interview and revelations gave the power and strength to many women for coming out and till now, many big names from all walks of life have been accused.
Through open letters, photographs and videos, women are finally being vocal about the horrific events that occured and still haunt them. From the music industry, media houses and film business, veterans have been called out by actresses, fans and journalists till now. Have a look:
According to Tanushree's ecxlusive interview with Zoom, Nana Patekar tried to harass her on the sets of their 2008 movie Horn Ok Pleassss. She had filed a complaint against the actor but no action was taken back them so she decided to take things in her own hand and called Nana out! Moreover, Tanushree allegations helped other women come forward and share their #MeToo story. Talking about the matter, Nana Patekar said, “What should I say? I said 10 years ago. The truth which was 10 years ago remains the same today and will continue to be tomorrow as well.”
Writer and comedian for the comedy collective All India Bakchod, Utsav was accused for sending implicit pictures and messages on social media to girls and even minors. After a trail of women spoke against him, AIB removed all videos with him from their accounts. After denying all allegations, Utsav, who now faces a police investigation, tweeted that he has "been the exact monster I've been trying to fight all my life". Due to this, AIB's co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Tanmay Bhat has stepped away from the group due to not acting on a complaint of sexual harassment.
After a female employee at Phantom Films accused Vikas Bahl of sexually harassing her during a promotion event of Bombay Velvet in Goa, many other woman came forward with their similar experiences with the director. She claims that Vikas insisted on dropping her to her hotel room and assaulted her in an inebriated state. Even Kangana Ranaut accused the Queen director of harassing her. Now Vikas has filed a defamation against his partners at Phantom Films, Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane, as they have spoken about the aforementioned case to the press.
After TV writer and director Vinta Nanda alleged Alok Nath sexually assaulted her almost 19 years ago in a Facebook post, many other actress spoke about his behaviour after getting drunk. In her post, Vinta also stated that Alok harassed their lead actress Navneet Nishan on the set of the show. Now actress Himani Shivpuri went on to claim that Alok's nature is an open secret in the industry. TV actor Deepika Amin has also accused Alok Nath of such allegations. Another woman from the crew of Hum Saath Saath Hain accused Alok of harassment. Nath’s lawyer say that the actor is now planning to file defamation case against Sandhya Mridul and Vinta Nanda.
Comedy collective co-founder Gursimran Khamba was accused of mental harassment by anonymous woman, who knew him on a personal level. She later admitted that Khamba had developed feelings for her, which she did not reciprocate as she was with someone else. Apprently, this did not go down well with the comedian, who continued refusing to take no for an answer. "This was followed by him being angry and nasty and abusive," the woman alleged. Moreover, Khamba has also been accused of emotionally blackmailing the woman, abusing her and making drunk calls. Gursimran issued a public apology and agreed that "it had become a toxic relationship" and apologised "unconditionally". Soon AIB, too issued a statement, where it mentioned that Gursimran has been sent on a temporary leave.
Renowned filmmaker and actor Rajat Kapoor has been accused of sexual misconduct by several women. One journalist stated that Rajat asked her very uncomfortable questions during their meet and another woman recalled am incident that ocurred ten years ago, when Rajat used to call her “incessantly” from actor Saurabh Shukla’s phone. The woman further stated that Rajat Kapoor asked her if she knew any empty houses and later she realised what he had actually meant. Rajat Kapoor later apologised.
From a fellow singer to journalist and a fan from Kolkata, Kailash Kher has hurt many. Recalling the incident a journalist came forward and alleged that Kailash touched her inappropriately when she went to interview him. Then a fan from Kolkata claimed that Kailash has been harassing her and now, fellow singer Sona Mohapatra accuses Kailash Kher of harassing her on multiple occassaions.
One of India's top-selling authors Chetan Bhagat came in light when a woman shared screenshots of WhatsApp conversations between them. Later, Bhagat issued a public apology on Facebook.
Pulling out the big names of Bollywood, an anonymous woman shared her #MeToo story through writer Mahima Kukreja, who was one of the first women to accuse comedian Utsav Chakraborty of sexual harassment last week. The woman claims that Ghai spijed her drink and then assaulted her. Recalling the time when she working with him, the woman shared how often did Subash Ghai call her for script sessions at his apartment. Then once he tried to kiss her & pacified it the next day by calling the incident a “lover’s tiff”. Though she informed the first assistant director and two other women about the incident but no action was taken. However one day, after a late music session, Ghai insisited on dropping her off and offering a drink. Saying that the drink “was spiked”, the woman said she remembers being taken to a hotel room and assaulted before she lost consciousness. “As I hear some allegation made against me in the air from section of media. It’s very sad that it’s becoming a fashion to malign anyone known, bringing some stories from past without any truth or half-truth, if at all. I deny strictly and firmly all false allegations like these.” The 73- year old added, “I will go for defamation certainly," Ghai said in a statement.
A woman alleges that in 2001, Varun tried to inappropriately touch her during the reharasal of a play. However filmmaker Anurag Kashyap claims that he “refuses to believe any allegations about him (Varun)”. Further, Varun denied all charges and put out a statement on Twitter saying “NEVER touched any person inappropriately in life.”
Veteran Tamil poet Vairamuthu faced sexual assault allegations when singer Chinmayi recalled two occasions when he made her feel 'uncomfortable.' The singer claims that she was told “she won’t have a career”, if she fails to "cooperate." Soon many other woman accused Vairamuthu of sexual misconduct but he denied them all.
Race 3 actress Saloni Chopra alleged that writer-director Sajid Khan sexually harassed her while she worked as his assistant. She claimed that she was in a physical violent relationship with actor Zain Durrani and accused film director Vikas Bahl of “sexist” behaviour. After Sonali shared her experience, journalist Karishma Upadhyay came forward and revealed that Sajid indulged in dirty talks with her and exposed himself when had gone to his sister’s house to interview him. She alleged that he even forcibly kissed her. Later on, he allegedly body-shamed her when they were working on an MTV project.
Singer Chinmayi Sripaada shared a #MeToo story of an aspiring singer who claims that Raghu tried to kiss her in his studio when she was recording a song. hinmayi shared another tweet revealing the story of a singer who said Raghu asked her to sit on his lap during one of their meetings at his studio. Raghu Dixit issued an apology.
On Wednesday, comedienne Kaneez Surka claimed that her fellow stand-up comedian Aditi Mittal "forcibly kissed" her on the mouth, two years ago at a comedy show. Coming out in the wake of #MeToo movement in India, Kaneez alleged Aditi violated her boundaries of personal choice and “humiliated” her in front of an audience of 100 and many comedians. Kaneez further stated that she mustered the courage to reach out to Aditi a year ago, she first apologised but soon turned hostile towards her, leaving her confused and hurt. And seeing Aditi's name on social media as “a champion of the cause” had been troubling her for some time. In order to find peace, Kaneez contacted Aditi Mittal on Tuesday via a mutual friend and asked her to come out with a public apology and let her keep her identity secret. But this time Mittal “denied kissing me on the mouth, gaslighted me and asked to cross check”. On late Wednesday evening, Aditi reacted on Twitter to Kaneez's allegation saying she is ‘unconditionally sorry’.
Tanushree Dutta, who sparked the #MeToo movement in india, alleged that Bollywood filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri behaved inappropriately towards her while shooting a 2005 movie. However, Agnihotri's lawyer denied the "frivolous" claims.
