All thumbs-up to veteran actor Gajraj Rao and Neena Gupta for their immensely impressive performance in the role of a cute middle-aged couple. Directed by Amit Sharma, Badhaai Ho became an anticipated project soon after, its hilarious trailer was launched by the makers.
The trailer displayed a peak into the immensely funny life of a middle-class family led by Jeetender Kaushik (Gajraj Rao) and her wife Priyamvada Kaushik (Neena Gupta) who is blessed with two sons viz, Nakul (Ayushmann Khurrana) and Gullar (Shardul Rana). And things were nearly fine in the life of Kaushik-family until, Priyamvada Kaushik aka Neena Gupta breaks the news of her pregnancy.
Quirky music, brilliant actors and a relatable social drama made the trailers of Ayushmann Khurrana and Dangal fame actress Sayna Malhotra starrer Badhaai Ho, a highly anticipated project among the audience. Well, the movie is finally out and all you have to do is to decide whether to go or not to go for watching it.
Before starting with why you should or shouldn't watch this hilarious comedy-drama, we would advise you to book a place in your nearest theater which is showing this movie! In an era of entertainment where at least 20 movies release in a year, it gets very difficult to select the ones that are to be watched with your family. Thankfully, director Amit Sharma has worked his way out in producing a hilarious yet thought-provoking script with some of the finest actors from the industry including Gajraj Rao, Neena Gupta, Sanya Malhotra and Aushmann Khurrana. The movie is a subtle display of socially relevant cinema which must not be missed by families.
Although, there are one or two scenes in which the lead actors; Ayushmann Khurrana and Sanya Malhotra are about to display intimacy but it is nothing compared to what the kids are watching on Disney Channel, nowadays. Besides a few moments of awkwardness, you will find a ton of ice-breakers to enjoy with your family.
Undoubtedly, the script and actors of the movie are tremendously synced and 'timing' plays an important role in making Badhaai Ho, a hilarious comedy movie. Now, let us talk about what this movie has to offer to the audience.
The movie deals around the hypocrisies of Indian society as per which marriage and pregnancy are celebrated but topics like sex and romance become awkward to deal with. Director Amit Sharma brilliantly eliminates all the awkward scenes from the movie by adding pun and comedy to it. Badhaai Ho is set in the Lodhi colony of New Delhi where this family has spent a major part of their lives.
As witnessed in the trailer, the nearly-fine life of the Kaushik family changes when Neena Gupta aka Nakul's mother breaks the news of becoming pregnant. This lands the whole family into an awkward position where a middle-aged couple is not supposed to have sex/kids in the middle-class Indian society. Where the whole neighborhood is sarcastically congratulating Nakul's parents, Nakul who is born and brought up in the same society is left with only one question, 'Yeh Bhi Koi Mummy Papa Ke Karne Ki Cheez Hai?'
But one person in the family is most affected by the news of Priyamvada's pregnancy, Dadi (Grandmom) who is being played by Surekha Sikri. While Priyamvada and Jeetender kaushik has mixed feelings towards her pregnancy, her kids and mother-in-law (Dadi) are left red-faced. A lot of awkward situations which are enjoyable only when happening-with-others follow in the movie.
Most comedy scenes are open-ended as a social message is attached with a thread-like string. Badhaai Ho will take you back to the 90s with well-crafted dialogues and retro tracks during Jeetender and Priyamvada's love scenes. The whole setting of the movie is very light, positive and happy which is rare in today's cinema.
Talking about the Dangal actress, Sanya just breezes through her role as Nakul's modern girlfriend who is also affected by her mother-in-law's pregnancy. As many would be expecting Sanya and Ayushmann's love-story to take the main stage but this story is not about them. Badhaai Ho recites the story of a cute middle-aged couple who needs to pay the price of loving each other.
As per our final verdict, we will like to award Ayushmann and Sanya Malhotra starrer comedy-drama movie, 8 out of 10 stars.
