Today, we're going to talk about the movie which opened the IFFI last year and has been one of the Best Film nominees at the London Film Festival. Yes, you've guessed it right. Beyond the Clouds, the master piece of prominent Iranian filmmaker Majid Majidi, who has movies like Baran and The Color of Paradise to his credit couldn't have been any better than this.
The story begins with Amir (Ishaan Khatter), a peddler, who gets into trouble with the local police. While running for his life through the busy Mumbai streets, Aamir ends up to her sister Tara (Malavika Mohanan). Scared for what might happen next, Amir hands over the packet of drugs to Tara and she promises to keep it safe till things settle down. Time goes by and one day, Tara somehow misplaces the packet. Worried for her brother, Tara sets out on a quest to get the packet back but instead, gets jailed in the case of an attempted murder. Does Tara find the packet? Did she really kill someone? And will she ever get out of jail? To know the answers of these questions, you have to watch the film! It’s a journey about two human beings find out the genuine meaning of life.
Written by Majid Majidi and Mehran Kashani, the script of the film is full of surprises. It might bring you face-to-face with the dark truths of life, but the makers manage it with equal altruistic incidents. In cinema it’s often said to capture a natural act by a kid is the most difficult thing to attempt; Majidi with this one has mastered that area. The duo takes you through the streetstyle beauty of Mumbai, and the amazing outflow of emotions helps to maintain the connect with the characters throughout the film.
No one can say that this movie is Ishaan Khatter's first film. He is brilliant and has surely lived up to Majid's expectations. He roars on the silver screen and in every scene, he manages to be better than before! Please don't miss to watch him in his emotional outburst scene; it’s one of the best to come out from the world cinema. The feelings are mutual for Malavika Mohanan. She is amazing, and it does not feel that this is her first Hindi movie. In the beginning, she might come out as dramatic but hold on till the end because she is a tigress! GV Sharada, the woman who houses 3 national awards, delivers yet another deserving performance as paati. Each and every child artist in the film is a hero; thanks to Majidi’s connect with these little wonders.
Though Majid Majidi was experimenting himself in this movie, he's done exponential work. So perfectly has he mixed two sensibilities in Iranian and Indian, to come up as one new- humanitarian. Special mention to the way he has bought praiseworthy performance from the first-timers. There are places where he leaves us unanswered, but really who cares?
Having a maestro like A.R Rahman on board is just a blessing in disguise. Rahman creates a magical blend of music as the narration goes on. But he shows his real skills when he decides to play fast-paced Tabla and Sitar; OH GOD! He takes it to another level!
Expect nothing but the best because that is what you get when you walk in to the theatre to see Majid Majidi's latest offering. Giving it no less than 9/10, watch Beyond the Clouds to realise how you can make better use of your life!
