If you've watched the 2016 Mudassar Aziz's hit rom-com Happy Bhag Jayegi then there's no way you aren't going for the sequel Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi. Reprising their previous roles we have Diana Penty, Jimmy Sheirgill, Ali Fazal and Piyush Mishra. However, the film has seen a lush of new fine actors including Sonakshi Sinha, Jassie Gill, Aparshakti Khurrana and Jeeveshu Ahluwalia.
This comedy roller-coaster begins when an aspiring Horticulture professor Harpreet Kaur aka Happy (Sonakshi Sinha), leaves for her dream job in China. Cut to the second story in the film, where some goons are waiting for the other Happy (Diana Penty) who is about to land in China with her husband Guddu (Ali Fazal). Then, comes the Bollywood cliches- a mix of cabs due to the same name, change of fates and the confusion begin.
While the goons abduct our new Happy (Sonakshi) and the Horticulture College transport receives our old Happy (Diana Penty) and her husband, the story just keeps getting better. In no time, Daman Singh Bhagga (Jimmy Sheirgill) and Usman Afridi (Piyush Mishra) also reach China to find well, HIS BRIDE! Our old Happy. One thing leads to another and it keeps getting better.
Director Mudassar Aziz has nailed it once again. His direction and dialogues are one of the main reasons to watch this movie. If you're wondering about some quirky Indo-Pak & Indo-China jokes and one-liners then trust me, they are there. So well placed, you'll laugh even after hearing them for multiple times. If you've watched the prequel then you understand the power of this film's dialogues. They're high on energy and performance. A sure light-hearted entertainment and a must watch, given its Raksha Bandhan weekend. I am sure every sister would love to watch it! However, the second half could have been better but the one-liners will keep your seat tight!
It goes without saying that Jimmy Sheirgill is the 'sher' of the film! The actor is in his zone and there's no way you're getting anyone better than him. Oh and with Piyush Mishra by his side, they're a perfect package of swag, charm & amuse; they're just too funny with words to handle! You know, Jimmy and Piyush- together are unstoppable! Our 'happy' couple, Diana Penty and Ali Fazal are superb just like the previous one but the new 'Happy' (Sonakshi Sinha) took us all by surprise. She's fresh, irresistible and this movie was a risky move because Happy=Diana but it worked out fine in the end. The newest Punjabi Munda of Bollywood, Jassi Gill surprises big time! Though he only has a limited on-screen presence, he leaves his mark. He's a charmer amongst the ladies and a sweet touch of comical relief. Aparshakti Khurrana and Jeeveshu Ahluwalia were a delight. Special mention to Aparshakti's role as it is as juicer as it can be! Jeeveshu will bring a smile. He’s good in his short appearance though I wished to see more of him.
Mudassar Aziz manages to take out the crisp from a very limited scope and explore the premises of the first film. He has done a fine work with the film's direction however, the second half could have been better. Happy Bhag Jayegi, the prequel had some underrated gems in songs but the sequel has better songs to offer. The Chinese touch to the score goes well with the scenes.
Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi is a family-entertainer. It has moments that will crack you up even when you’re watching it for the nth time on television years from now. Do watch it and we give HPBJ a good 6.5/10!
